BUD'DHA (about 568-488 B.c.). More than 500 years before Christ was born—and at about the same time when Confucius was founding the religion of the Chinese—a Hindu prince named Siddhattha Gotama became so famed in far-off India for his holiness and tender-hearted love for all creatures that he was called "the Buddha," or "the Enlightened One."
