BLACK GUM - COMMERCIAL WOOD Black gum (Nyssa sylvatica), although generally called "gum," is in no way related botanically to red gum. It is a member of the same genus as tupelo, and much of it is included in the statistics of that wood.

Black gum is somewhat heavier than red gum. The wood is moderately strong and stiff, tough, and very difficult to split—properties which are often desirable.
