RED ALDER - COMMERCIAL WOOD Red alder (Alnus oregona) is a Pacific Coast hardwood, found chiefly west of the Cascade mountains, in Oregon and Washington. The wood is reddish brown in color, with rather fine, even grain, compact, and hard. It works and polishes well, and makes a good imitation of mahogany when desired.
