HORNBEAM - HEAVY HARD AND TOUGH AMERICAN WOOD Hornbeam or ironwood (Ostrya virginiana) is one of the heaviest, hardest, and toughest American woods, ranking very closely to the hickories in these respects. It is not available in such large quantities as the hickories, but is used for much the same purposes, as Table 89 indicates.
Specific uses for hornbeam includes axles, felloes, tongues, levers, canes, umbrella sticks, and whipstocks.
