GORAL (Urotragus goral), a small Himalayan rough-haired cylindrical-horned ruminant related to the chamois. The native name is often extended to all the members of the genus. In addi tion to peculiarities in the form of the skull, gorals are chiefly dis tinguished from serows (q.v.) by not possessing a gland below the eye. Several species are known, ranging from the Himalaya to Burma and through Tibet to North China.
