GREAT DIVIDING RANGE, a name given to the east ern and south-eastern highlands of Australia. It is applicable in so far as it forms the main water-shed between coastwards and inward-flowing drainage on these sides, but misleading in that the highlands in question are a belt of plateaux rather than mountain ranges in the ordinary sense.
