GREENFIELD, a city of central Indiana, U.S.A., 2Im. E. of Indianapolis, on Federal highway 4o, the Pennsylvania railroad, and a branch of the Blue river; the county seat of Hancock county. The population in 192o was 4,168; 193o it was 4,188. It is surrounded by fertile farmlands, and has canning plants and other factories. Greenfield was founded about 1828 and was in corporated in 185o. It was the birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley.
