GUDGEON (Gobio gobio, sometimes called G. fluviatilis), a cyprinid fish inhabiting Europe and northern Asia. It rarely exceeds a length of 8 in. ; it has a barbel at each corner of the mouth, and a row of blackish spots along the side of the body ; it frequents sandy or gravelly shallows. Other species of Gobio inhabit China and Japan.
