GUEBWILLER (Ger. Gebweiler), capital of an arrondisse ment in the department of Haut Rhin (Alsace-Lorraine), France, at the foot of the Vosges, on the Lauch, 13 m. S. of Colmar. Pop. T0,924. From the 8th century it belonged to the religious foundation of Murbach. In 1789, at the outbreak of the Revolu tion, the monastic buildings were laid in ruins, and, though the archives were rescued and removed to Colmar, the library perished.
The church of St. Leodgar dates from the 12th century ; i.he old Dominican convent is now used as a market and concert hall. The chief industries are spinning and dyeing, and manufacture of cloth and machinery; quarrying is carried on and the town is celebrated for its white wines. It has a sub-prefecture.
