GOUGH, RICHARD (1735-1809), English antiquary, was born in London on Oct. 21, 1753, the son of a director of the East India company. In 1756, he began antiquarian excursions in various parts of Great Britain. In 1773 he began an edition in English of Camden's Britannia, which appeared in 1789. His great work is Sepulchral Monuments of Great Britain . . . from the Norman Conquest to the Seventeenth Century (2 vols., 1786-96) . Gough was director of the Society of Antiquaries from 1771 to 1791. He was elected F.R.S. in 1775. He died at Enfield on Feb. 20, 1809.
