HACKER, ARTHUR (1858-1919), English painter, was born in London on Sept. 25, 1858, the son of Edward Hacker, a line engraver. He became a student at the Royal Academy schools in 1876, and from 188o-81 worked at the atelier Bonnat, Paris, subsequently travelling widely both in Europe and in North Africa. The best known of his paintings are "Her Daughter's Legacy," "The Mother" and "The Cloud" ; his "Annunciation" (1892) was bought by the Chantrey trustees. He became A.R.A. in 1894 and R.A. in 191o. Hacker also became well known as a portrait painter. He died in London on Nov. 12, 1919.
