HABERLANDT, GOTTLIEB (1854– ), Austrian bot anist, born at Ungarisch-Altenburg on Nov. 28, 1854, was direc tor (1910-23) of the plant-physiology department of Berlin uni versity. From 1916 onwards he edited the Beitrdge zur allge meinen Botanik. He travelled in the Dutch East Indies to study tropical botany (see his Eine botanische Tropenreise, 1893 ; 3rd ed., 1926). He published many important works on plant physi ology; his later work deals more especially with the sensitiveness of plants to external impressions.
