HERNANDES or FERNANDES, GREGORIO (c.

1576-1636), Spanish sculptor, was born in Galicia about 1576. He was a pupil of Francisco del Rincon at Valladolid and became a famous sculptor of altarpieces and religious subjects. The figures on the high altar of San Miguel are his work and he also executed the altar of the Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion monastery at Vittoria (1618-21). An early figure of Christ (16o5) is in the monastery of the Sacrament in Madrid, and the museum at Valladolid contains among other pieces a Pieta and a relief, "The Baptism of Christ." One of his finest works is the "Virgin of Sorrows" at Santa Cruz. He died at Valladolid on Jan.
