HAMILTON, a village of Madison county, New York, U.S.A., 29 M. S.W. of Utica; on the New York, Ontario and Western railway. The population in 193o was 1,700. It is the seat of Colgate university (Baptist) , founded in 1819, and renamed in 1890 after the Colgate family, several members of which had made liberal gifts. The region was settled about 179o, and the village was incorporated in 1812.
