HASTINGS, a city of south-western Michigan, U.S.A., on the Chicago, Kalamazoo and Saginaw and the Michigan Central rail ways; the county seat of Barry county, which has over 200 lakes. The population was 5,132 in (94% native white) and was 5,227 in 193o by the Federal census. It is in the heart of the pleasure-resort section; shipping point for wheat, corn, live stock and dairy products; and has a large milk condensery, machine shops and factories making tables, car-seals, book-cases and cab inets, automatic fire extinguishers and automobile accessories. The city was founded about 1835 and incorporated in 1871.
