HAWKSBILL (Eretmochelys imbricata), a marine turtle, so called from the shape of its snout, common in the tropical parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and producing the tortoise shell (q.v.) of commerce. Its flesh is valueless, though the eggs are edible. The hawksbill is carnivorous. (See TORTOISE.)
