HAZEBROUCK, a town of northern France, in the depart ment of Nord, on the canalized Bourre, 29 m. W.N.W. of Lille, on the Northern railway, between Lille and St. Omer. Pop. (193I ) 14,859. It was a centre of movement for the Allies during the war of 1914-1918. Allenby occupied the town in Oct. 1914, and it remained in British hands throughout, being protected against the German advance by the forest of Nieppe. There is little of archi tectural interest in the town except the church of St. Eloi, a i6th century building with fine open work on the spire, and a i6th century convent, since converted into a hospital. Hazebrouck is the market for a fertile agricultural district, and has trade in live stock, grain and hops. Cloth weaving is the chief industry. Hazebrouck is an important railway junction.
