HENDERSON, a city of north-western Kentucky, U.S.A., on the Ohio river, 12m. below Evansville, Ind. ; the county seat of Henderson county. It is on Federal highways 41 and 6o, and is served by the Illinois Central, the Louisville and Nashville, and the Louisville. Henderson and St. Louis railways. The popula tion was 12,169 in 1920 (24% negroes) and was ii,668 in 193o by the Federal census. The city is built on the high bank of the river, well above flood level. Coal is mined in the region and there are three mines within the city limits. The county produces espe cially hogs, corn and fruit. The city has many tobacco-stemming plants, a large cotton mill, and various other manufacturing in dustries. The factory output in 1925 was valued at $4,811,182. Henderson (originally called Red Banks) was settled in 1784, named after Richard Henderson (1734-85), laid out by his com pany in 1797, incorporated as a town in 181o, and chartered as a city in
