HERISAU, the largest town in the Swiss canton of Appen zell, built on the Glatt torrent, and by rail 7 m. S.W. of St. Gall or 132 m. N.W. of Appenzell. Pop. (193o) 13,599. The lower portion of the tower of the parish church dates from the 11 th century or even earlier. About 5 m. to the south-east is Hundwil, where the Landsgereinde of Ausser Rhoden meets in the odd years (in other years at Trogen) on the last Sunday in April. Some of the finest embroideries are manufactured in Herisau.
