HAWEIS, HUGH REGINALD English preacher and writer, was born at Egham, Surrey, on April 3, 1838. On leaving Trinity College, Cambridge, he travelled in Italy and served under Garibaldi in 186o. On his return to England he was ordained and held various preferments. A lively and very fashionable preacher, he was much interested in music, and wrote books on violins and church bells, besides contributing an article to the 9th edition of the Encyclo pædia Britannica on bell-ringing. He died on Jan. 29, 1901.
