GURWOOD, JOHN British soldier, entered the army in 1808. He served through the Peninsular War, distin guishing himself at Ciudad Rodrigo (1812), and as brigade-major of Lambert's brigade of the 6th Infantry Division in all the im portant actions of 1813-14. He then served under the prince of Orange in the Netherlands, and was severely wounded (for the third time) at Waterloo. Gurwood was for many years Welling ton's private secretary; he was occupied from 1837 to his death (Dec. 2 5, 1845) with the preparation of Wellington's Despatches.
