HAMILTON, ROBERT (1743-1829), Scottish economist and mathematician, born at Pilrig, Edinburgh, on June ti, was rector of Perth academy (1769-1779), professor of natural philosophy (1779-1817), and of mathematics (1817-1829), at Aberdeen. Hamilton's most important work is the Essay on the National Debt (1813) , attacking the sinking fund.
