HERRICK, ROBERT (1868-1938), American author, was born at Cambridge (Mass.), April 26, 1868. He was educated at the Cambridge Latin school and at Harvard university, where he graduated in 18go. He became instructor in rhetoric at the Massa chusetts Institute of Technology in 189o; in 1893 he accepted a similar position at the University of Chicago, where he was made professor of English (1905-23) . His novels and short stories, as a rule, deal with problems of modern life; his style is realistic. He has published The Web of Life (I goo) ; The Real World (Igo 1) ; The Common Lot (1904); The Memoirs of an American Citizen (1905) ; The Master of the Inn (1908) ; The Healer (191 I) ; One Woman's Life (I 913) ; Clark's Field (1914) ; The Conscript Mother (1916) ; Homely Lilla (1923) ; Waste (1924) ; Wander ings (1 9 2 5) ; and Chimes (1926).
