HAYM, RUDOLF (1821-1901), German publicist and philosopher, was born at Griinberg, Silesia, on Oct. 5, 1821, and died at St. Anton (Arlberg) on Aug. 27, 19o1. He studied philosophy and theology at Halle and Berlin, and was a member of the National Assembly at Frankfort in 1848. From 1851 he lectured in literature and philosophy at the University of Halle. His writings are biographical and critical, devoted mainly to modern German philosophy and literature. In 18 7 o he published a masterly history of the Romantic school. His biographies of W. von Humboldt (1856), Hegel (1857), Schopenhauer (1864), Herder (18 7 7-85) and Max Duncker (189o) ably portray the relation of these thinkers to the thought of their day. In 1902 appeared his Erinnerungen aus meinem Leben, in 1902 Philoso phische Abhandlungen and in 1903 Gesammelte Au f sdtze.
