HEATON, SIR JOHN HENNIKER, 1ST BART. (1848 1914), English postal reformer, was born at Rochester, in Kent, on May 18, 1848, the son of Lt.-Col. Heaton. He spent 20 years in Australia, where he was a well known newspaper proprietor. As M.P. for Canterbury, England, from 1885 to 191o, he advo cated penny postage throughout the British empire, and lived to see it achieved and extended to the United States. He died at Geneva, on Sept. 8, 1914.
