HIPPARION, one of the extinct horses which spread from North America over Europe and Asia during the lower Pliocene. Hipparion (or Hippotherium) was not directly ancestral to the modern horse (Equus), but probably represents a lateral off shoot derived from Merychippus. It is the most abundant fossil in the so-called Hipparion fauna. (See EQUIDAE. )
