HOUSE, HOMER DOLIVER (1878— ), American botanist, was born at Oneida, N.Y., on July 21, 1878. He gradu ated at Syracuse university in 19o2 and pursued further study at Columbia university from which in 1908 he received the degree of doctor of philosophy. He was professor of botany and bacteriol ogy at Clemson Agricultural college (S.C.) 1906–o7, and asso ciate director and dendrologist of the Biltmore Forest school in 1908-13. In 1913 he became assistant State botanist and in 1914 State botanist of New York. Besides numerous papers, chiefly on systematic botany, oecology and dendrology, his writings in clude Wild Flowers of New York (1918) illustrated with colour plates and Annotated List of the Ferns and Flowering Plants of New York State (1924), a valuable floral catalogue.
