HOWTH, a seaside town of Co. Dublin, Ireland, on the northern horn of Dublin bay, 9 m. E.N.E. of Dublin by rail. Pop. (1926), 1,357. The collegiate church was founded about and has a monastic building attached to it. The town is fre quented as a watering-piace by residents of the capital. The artificial harbour, formed (1807-32) between the mainland and Ireland's Eye, preceded Kingstown as the mail-packet station for Great Britain, but was found to be liable to silt, and is now chiefly used by fishing boats and yachts.
