HOXTER, a town in the Prussian province of Westphalia, situated on the Weser, 32 m. N. of Cassel. Pop. (1925) 7,217. It has a mediaeval town hall, and 15th and 16th century houses. Hoxter in the time of Charlemagne was a villa regia and the scene of a battle between him and the Saxons. It was in the protection of the adjacent monastery of Corvey and later joined the Hanseatic League. It suffered severely during the Thirty Years' War. After the peace of Westphalia in 1648 it was united to Brunswick; and in 1807 it was transferred to the kingdom of Westphalia, after the dismemberment of which, in 1814, it came into the possession of Prussia. The church of St. Kilian has a pulpit dating from 1595 and a font dating from 1631. The prin cipal manufactures are paper, bricks, cement and rubber, and it has a number of sawmills.
