HUNGERFORD, a town of Berkshire, England, extending into Wiltshire, 61 m. W. by S. of London by rail. Pop. (19a 1) 2,784. It is situated in the valley of the Kennet and lies on the Kennet and Avon canal. It has agricultural trade. John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster, presented to the citizens manorial rights, in cluding common pasture and fishing. The trout of the Kennet are numerous and carefully preserved. Hungerford is also a favourite hunting centre. Pop. of rural district (1931)
