HOLL, KARL (1866-1926), German church historian, born at Tubingen on May 15, is famous for his work on Luther (vol. i. of his Gesammelte Aufsiitze zur Kirchengeschichte, 192I). This book is a classic work, showing a profound knowledge of the period and a remarkable insight into the character of Luther himself. Roll was professor at Tubingen, then at Berlin, and in the year before his death rector of the university of Berlin.
Roll's works include: Die Sacra Parallela des Johannes Damascenus (1897) ; Enthusiasmus and Bussgewalt beim griechischen Monchtum (1898) ; and Die Bedeutung der grossen Kriege fur das religiose and Kirchliche Leben innerhalb des Protestantismus (1917) .
