VIEBIG, CLARA (1860— ), German novelist, was born on July 17, 186o, at Trier, and educated at Diisseldorf and at the Berlin high school of music. She married in 1896 Fritz Cohn, and has one son. She began by writing stories of the Eifel coun try, in which she was born, Kinder der Eifel (1897). Among the most famous of her earliest novels was Das schlafende Heer (1904), the scene of which is laid in German Poland; in this book there is no extenuation of the faults of either Germans or Poles.
Among her other works are: Einer Mutter Sohn (1906), Tochter der Hekuba (1917), Unter dem Freiheitsbaum (1924), and Die Passion (1926).
