WARDLAW, HENRY (d. 144o), son of Sir Andrew Wardlaw, was educated at Oxford and Paris and nominated by the papal court at Avignon bishop of St. Andrews (conse crated 14o3) He was tutor to James I., restored the cathedral. and, on the return of James from England, became one of his principal advisers. He persecuted the Wycliffites. Wardlaw issued
the charter of foundation of St. Andrews university, the first in Scotland, in 1411. It was confirmed by a bull of Benedict XIII. on Aug. 28, 1413.
