VIIPURI, formerly Viborg, a seaport and summer resort of Finland in 6o° 43' N., 45' E., at the mouth of the Saima canal on the Bay of Viipuri in the Gulf of Finland. Pop. (1932) 59,955. The canal links it with a series of lakes. Its exports are cement and farm produce, and its imports coal, fertilizers, food stuffs and manufactured goods. It is picturesquely situated on

glaciated, dome-shaped, granite hills surrounding the bay, which is guarded by the naval station of Bjorko. Viipuri is a tourist centre for the Finnish lakes. Its castle, built in 1293 by Marshal Torkel Knutson, was the first centre for the spread of Christianity in Karelia.
