VILLANUEVA DE LA SERENA, a town of western Spain, in the province of Badajoz, near the left bank of the river Guadiana, and on the Madrid-Badajoz railway. Pop. (1930) 15,351. Villanueva is the chief town of La Serena, locally cele brated for red wine and melons. Grain and hemp are also culti vated, and live stock extensively reared in the neighbourhood.
