VRYHEID, a town in South Africa, 291 m. N. by W. of Durban; 49' S. lat., 44' E. long.; altitude 3,921 ft. Pop. (1921) 4,019 (2,062 white). In the vicinity a considerable num ber of important collieries are being worked. The Hlobane coal fields are south-east of the town. Vryheid is the chief centre of a district of the same name, which contains indications of gold, iron, galena, etc. The Europeans numbered 3,386 in 1931.
