WINTERHALTER, FRANZ XAVIER German portrait painter, was born at Menzen-Schwand, Black For est, on April 20, 1806. In 1823 he went to Munich to study under Stieler and afterwards established himself in Karlsruhe, where he became a protégé of the Grand Leopold. He excelled in the representation of elegant, graceful ladies, exhibiting regu larly at the Salon from 1835-68 and at the Royal Academy from 1852-67. In 1857 he was made officier of the Legion of Honour.
He died at Frankfurt on July 9, 1873.
His portraits include those of Louis Philippe (Calais), the duc d'Aumale (Chantilly), the Prince Consort (National Portrait Gallery, London) , Queen Victoria, the duchess of Kent, Napoleon III. and Empress Eugenie, the Empress of Russia, and others.
