WIGGLESWORTH, MICHAEL (1631-1705), American clergyman, physician and poet, was born in England (probably in Yorkshire) Oct. 18, 1631. His father, persecuted for his Puri tan faith, emigrated with his family to New England in 1638 and settled in New Haven. In 1651 Michael graduated at Harvard, where he was a tutor (and a Fellow) in 1652-54 and again in 1697-1705. Having fitted himself for the ministry, he preached at Charlestown in 1653-54, and in spite of ill health, was pastor at Malden from 1656 until his death, June io, 1705. Wiggles

worth is best known as the author of The Day of Doom; or a Poetical Description of the Great and Last Judgment (1662), a lurid exposition of Calvinistic theology, which children were made to learn like the catechism.
