Waterbuck

WATERBUCK, a large South African antelope (Cobus ellipsiprymnus) of the subfamily Cervicaprinae, characterized by the white elliptical ring on the buttocks and the general reddish grey colour of the long coarse hair. They have heavily fringed necks and tufted tails ; long sub lyrate, ringed horns are carried by the bucks only. The name is

extended to include the sing-sing (C. defassa), a widespread spe cies, without the white ring. Both species equal the red deer in size. (See ANTELOPE.)
