BAYLEY, WILLIAM SHIRLEY ), American geologist, was born in Baltimore, Md., on Nov. 1o, 1861. He graduated at Johns Hopkins university in 1883 and in 1886 re ceived the degree of doctor of philosophy from that institution. From 1888 until 1906 he taught in Colby college and Lehigh uni versity and in the latter year became a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois. In 1889 he was appointed to the United States geological survey.
