BUMBLEBEE or BUMBLEBEE, the common name for bees (q.v.), of the genus Bombus, which have a thick hairy body, often banded with bright colours. There are numerous species, found generally throughout the world except the Australian region, where, however, they have been introduced as their presence is necessary to fertilize some of the cultivated species of clover (see SOCIAL INSECTS, HYMENOPTERA).
