BURFORD, market town, Oxfordshire, England. Along the ridge flanking the valley of the Windrush on the south as it leaves the Cotswolds and enters the Oxford basin runs the Oxford-Chel tenham road, whence the main street of Burford slopes down to the river. Population (1921) 987. A synod at Burford in 705 is chronicled. The Mercians were defeated here by the West Saxons under Cuthred (752) and Cromwell gained successes here in the Civil War.

The church of St. John the Baptist has a massive Norman tower with a delicate Perpendicular spire. The nave and aisles are mainly Perpendicular in appearance but are of earlier construction. Among notable old buildings in the High street is the Tolsey or old town hall.
