BURNTISLAND, a royal, municipal and police burgh, Fife, Scotland, on the shore of the Firth of Forth, Sam. S.W. of Kirk caldy by the L.N.E. railway. Pop. Its links and beach give it repute as a summer resort. The chief industries are distilling, fisheries and shipbuilding. There are railway works and an export of coal and coke. Its harbour is the northern station of a ferry across the firth from Granton, 5m. south. On the rocks forming the western end of the harbour stands Rossend Castle. The name Burntisland may refer to the time when the site, or part of it, formed an island, as sea-sand is the subsoil even of the oldest quarters. Another derivation is from Gaelic words mean ing "the island beyond the bend." It returns one member to parliament with Dysart, Kinghorn, Kirkcaldy, Buckhaven, Methil and Innerleven.
