BUCHANAN, CLAUDIUS (1766-1815), English divine, was born at Cambuslang, near Glasgow, and educated at the uni versities of Glasgow and Cambridge. He was Calcutta chaplain and vice-principal of the college of Fort William, and translated the gospels into Persian and Hindustani. His book Colonial Ec clesiastical Establishment (London, 1813) helped on the estab lishment of the Indian episcopate, and the appointment of the first English bishop of Calcutta.
