BRIENZ, LAKE OF, Canton Berne, Switzerland, an expan sion of the Aar, 9m. long, Lim. wide, 856ft. maximum depth, 1 II sq. m. area, surface 1,857ft. above sea. It is gloomy and in a deep hollow with Brienz on the east and Bonigen on the west. The Giessbach falls are on the south shore, and small villages on the north shore (see THUN, LAKE OF). Its chief affluent is the LUtschine from Grindelwald.
