BROWNING, OSCAR (1837-1923), English writer, was born in London Jan. 17 183 7, and died in Rome Oct. 6 1923. He was educated at Eton and at King's college, Cambridge, of which he became fellow and tutor. He was for 15 years a master at Eton, resuming residence in 1876 at Cambridge, where he became uni versity lecturer in history. He soon became a prominent figure in college and university life, encouraging especially the study of political science and modern political history, the extension of university teaching and the movement for the training of teachers. He is well known to Dante students by his Dante; Life and Works (1891) ; and to the study of Italian history he has contributed Guelphs and Ghibellines (19o3) . His works on modern history include Eng land and Napoleon in 1803 (1887) , History of England , Wars of the Nineteenth Century (1899), History of Europe 0900, Napoleon, the first Phase (19o5) . In 1910 he published Memories of Sixty Years at Eton, Cambridge and Elsewhere, and Memories of Later Years in 5923.
