DARDANELLES (Turk. Chanak Kali), the chief town of a Turkish vilayet which includes the peninsula of Gallipoli (q.v.), the ancient Troad, and the adjoining islands. Pop. (1927), 18,740. It is situated at the mouth of the Rhodius, and at the narrowest part of the strait of the Dardanelles, where its span is but a mile across. The pottery trade, from which the town derived its Turkish name (Chanak means "pot" in Osmanli) has declined in importance; valonia and cereals are the chief products of this section.
