DEWSBURY, market town, county and parliamentary borough, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on the river Calder, 8 m. south-south-west of Leeds, on the L.N.E. and L.M.S. rail ways. Pop. (1930 The parish church of All Saints was for the most part rebuilt in the i8th century; the portions still preserved of the original structure are mainly Early English. The chief industries are the making of blankets, carpets, druggets and worsted yarn ; and there are iron foundries and machinery works. Coal is worked in the neighbourhood. The parliamentary borough returns one member. The municipal borough was incorporated in 1862. Area, 6,72o acres. Edwin, king of Northumbria, had a mansion here in the 7th century. At Kirklees may be seen the remains of a Cistercian convent (12th century), in an ex tensive park, where tradition relates that Robin Hood died and was buried.
