DISPLACEMENT TONNAGE. In shipping, a term used to describe the actual weight of the water displaced by a ship. It is measured by ascertaining the cubic space occupied by that part of the ship which is immersed and dividing this by 35, a ton of sea water measuring 35 cubic feet.
