DESHAYES, GERARD PAUL French geologist and conchologist, born at Nancy on May was professor of natural history in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle. Deshayes examined the fossil Mollusca of the Paris Basin and of other Tertiary areas. His studies on the relations of the fossil to the recent species led him as early as 1829 to conclusions some what similar to those arrived at by Lyell, whom Deshayes assisted in the classification of the Tertiary system into Eocene, Miocene and Pliocene. His chief work, Mollusques de l'Algerie, the result of collections made in Algeria, where he was sent by the French Government in 1839, was issued (incomplete) in 1848. He died at Boran, Oise, on June 9,
